지구평화 수호자를 꿈꾸는 조지 클루니(George Clooney)가 감독한 영화 ‘모뉴먼츠맨’을 이끌어가는 질문은 “예술품을 위해 인간은 고귀한 목숨을 바칠 필요가 있는가?”였다. 그리고 영화는 “있다”를 암시하며 끝난다. 인류는 후손을 남기고 문화는 대대로 전승되므로, 선조들이 높은 가치를 부여한 유물인 예술품엔 목숨을 바칠만하다는 것. 2차 세계대전 시기에 실제로 존재했고, 아직도 사설탐정의 형식으로 존재한다고 보는, 예술품 수호자인 모뉴먼츠맨은 나치약탈품을 원소장자에게 돌려주는 데 활동을 주력한다.
